Drew Wright's performance on Canadian Idol Monday night was one of firsts: He was the first one to play the drums on the show and he was the first performer to take the stage on the new set. Luckily he wasn't the first one of the top 10 to get voted off the show.

Drew Wright's performance on Canadian Idol Monday night was one of firsts: He was the first one to play the drums on the show and he was the first performer to take the stage on the new set. Luckily he wasn't the first one of the top 10 to get voted off the show.

That was Adam Castelli from Hamilton, Ont., who received the fewest number of votes from the previous night's performance show that featured the music of David Bowie.

Wright sang Bowie's "Five Years" while playing the drums and the reviews from the judges were mostly positive, except for Zack Werner, who thought he "didn't sing it very well."

He also came in for some constructive criticism from Jake Gold and Farley Flex, who thought he should be more of a "front man" than hiding behind a set of drums.

"I think it's great you wanted to show people you can play drums. I personally would've rather seen you do it on a Tuesday night, I would've rather you had come out and rocked, shown yourself as a front man a little more, but I thought you sang it well and I also think you have great phrasing as a result of your experience being really rhythmic," said Jake.

"You looked amazing on TV I just gotta tell you," said Sass Jordan. "When you started to go up into the higher register that really killed it. I loved seeing you play the drums. I thought that was awesome. I've never seen that on this show before. Too bad it wasn't the Allman Brothers."

Farley thought although Drew took it to another level by playing drums, he doesn't feel he's very animated when he performs and "sitting down on the job" didn't really help that.

The performance show Monday night featured clips on all of the performers hometowns and Collingwood was featured prominently in the segment on Drew. He was interviewed at the elevators with Georgian Bay and Blue Mountain in the background and they showed numerous scenes around Collingwood with shops displaying "Vote for Drew" signs.

Drew talked about the fantastic support he has received from his home town, where he attended Admiral Collingwood Public School and Collingwood Collegiate Institute. They also interviewed his Mom and Dad, Ted and Anne Marie Wright and showed footage of his concert at Station Park.

The Collingwood resident advanced to the top 10 of the CTV reality show last Wednesday after performing "The Reason" by Hoobastank on Tuesday.

Judge Sass Jordan said Wright's voice is one of her favourites in the competition while judge Zack Werner rated Wright's voice an eight and his "rock star," persona a two.

Overall, Wright said he was pleased with his performance.

"I did the best I could with the voice I had that night," he said, he said in a phone interview with The Connection.

Wright was standing alongside his friend Gary Morissette when host Ben Mulroney announced who was moving on to the top 10.

"You just hope for the best," he said. "I really have a lot of respect for him (Morrissette). I'm happy to be through."

His performance on Canadian Idol came on the heels of a concert in Collingwood, where more than 3,000 people attended.

Wright said he was told that the concert - which was organized in three days - made Idol history, as nobody has organized anything that successful in that amount of time.

"It's indescribable," he said,

Wright will now move into a mansion for the remainder of his tenure on the show. Wright said he was pleased to sing David Bowie and that it worked to his advantage.

"I've been a huge David Bowie fan for a long time," he said.

Wright also hammed it up for the camera with host Ben Mulroney, who enjoyed a 'Vote for Drew,' cookie, which were made by Collingwood bakery Paula's Pantry.

"Thanks Paula," Wright said while finishing off the cookie.

According to CTV's Canadian Idol website, the remaining nine contestants are indeed living the 'Idol' life.

After staying in a swanky downtown hotel for the first three weeks of the competition, the competitors are now residing in a swanky mansion in one of Toronto's most elite neighbourhoods.

The seven-bedroom mansion that has housed celebrities like John Travolta features an indoor pool and Jacuzzi, two saunas, a racquetball/basketball court, a home theatre and fitness room. The sprawling backyard has plenty of green space for the Idols to lounge on or play a game of tennis on the full-size court. The mansion also has nine bathrooms, three fireplaces, an outdoor waterfall and more living rooms than you can count.

Drew said he was looking forward to the amenities, but noted they've been kept pretty busy.

"I love the home theatre, I'm a big movie fan and the pool's pretty cool," said Drew. "It would be great to enjoy it but maybe we'll have the chance to do that later this week."

This Monday, July 21 at 9 p.m. the remaining top 9 competitors perform on Rock 'n Roll Heaven week!
