The Owen Sound U17 Rockets travelled to Vaughan last weekend to win the Ontario Indoor Soccer Championship against Clarkson.
Since the beginning of November 2007 the Owen Sound U17 Rockets have been travelling to Vaughan and Brampton to compete in the Ontario Indoor Soccer League. This team consisted of players from Meaford, Thornbury, Markdale and the Owen Sound area. The challenge that was put against this young group of athletes was to go head to head against power house soccer teams such as Brampton, Markham, Woodbridge and Clarkson (representing Toronto).
The players on these four teams were representing the best players from the Greater Toronto Area and it didn't take long for these GTA teams to take notice of Owen Sound soccer as they began to win most of their games.
The regular season ended on April 19 and the Owen Sound U17 Rockets were tied at the top of the leader board with Clarkson. Once again, this past weekend, the Rockets travelled to Vaughan to compete in one final game to decide who the winner of the league and eventual Ontario Champions would be.
The boys from Grey County proved to be the victors, coming away with a 4-0 score and crowned the U17 Ontario Indoor Soccer Champions.
Local players from this region were Sean Harrington of Meaford, Brian Kennedy of Thornbury and our goalkeeper from Woodford Chris Mahy.
