If you are looking for an interesting way of getting involved in your community, please consider joining the Marsh Street Centre board of directors. Susan Armstrong who is past president, Bev Lapointe (first VP) and Rob Potter (our good prez) make up the nominating committee and have recently sent out a request for names of those who might be interested.
I'm sure any one of them or even yours truly will take you on a quick tour of the Centre and tell you about what might be expected in the way of work on the Centre. Since this place was re-built and opened pretty much completely by volunteers any government money has come in based on volunteer work, the Centre has thrived. It's community support that does it. If being on the board isn't your thing, there are a couple of committees who do things that help, such as the maintenance commitee that is working on getting new energy efficient windows for the auditorium and kitchen and putting in a new upgraded kitchen with high-grade stove and fridge. Thats where the marketing committee comes in. We market the facility through a variety of methods - including the upcoming fund raising concert by Lunch at Allens (Murray McLauchlan and his buddies Ian Thomas, Marc Jordan and Cindy Church).
The Centre wants to enlarge its volunteer base and is looking for more ways to involve the community. Do let us know if you have a lightbulb go off and spark an idea for us - even if you don't want to join the board or a committee - all ideas are welcome! The new board will be elected at the Annual General Meeting on June 10 at 7:30 p.m.
Activity group in full swing
You're invited to drop into the Centre on Mondays from 1 - 4 to participate in a multitude of activities in an informal friendly atmosphere. Lots of ideas floating around at this relaxed Monday afternoon - such as cards, games (Scrabble anyone? or Monopoly?) jewelry making, knitting, journaling or recording your family history, or making small wood working projects such as building bird houses. And your ideas for other activites or fun projects are welcome as well. There is a small fee being charged per visit - a toonie. Seems like that's a very tiny bit for all that's being offered. Coffee and tea are available as well I believe. You can call Irene Gibson at 599-7631, Gail Davies at 599-5662 or the Centre at 599-7837 to learn more - oh the area code by the way is 519 - if you didn't know that.
Dixieland Dinner
The Marsh Street chefs are at it again! On Friday April 25 just prior to Jazzmania this week. You can have a fabulous Cajun style dinner at the Centre  between 6:30 and 8 pm. What better way to kick off that fabulous evening of music?  Tickets are $18 in advance only folks - we need to know how much stuff to cook don't we? And now the Centre can take Visa or MasterCard as well as good old fashioned cash - so call today! They could be sold out in a hurry! Jessica's Book Nook in Thornbury also has tickets or you can email marshstreetcentre@rogers.com
Marsh Street's band for toe tapping, dancing and hand-clapping listneintg is the Regal Jazz Band.  You'll have a blast believe me!
Dance lessons
Dance Cafe is offering dancing lessons on Saturday April 26 at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. You'll be able to dance away the afternoon at the Big Band portions of the Georgian Sound Festival and probably even at Gospelfest where they may be room for dancing at the Community Arena.
Exit Who? - a laugh a minute
Thornbury Community Theatre is at it again and our own prez Rob Potter is back in the director's chair with Exit Who? - a comedy mystery by Fred Carmichael being presented in the auditorium at the Centre from May 1 - 3. Bev Byrne and Lori Campbell are producers. Tickets are at Jessica's Book Nook (Thornbury), Crow's Nest (Collingwood) and Stuff to Read in Meaford - $8 in advance and $10 at the door - save the $2 and spend it at the Monday mixer!
Lunch at Allen's
Ticket sales have heated up for this fund raiser... I've been in touch with Cindy Church - who is the manager for the group as well as providing the female vocal sounds - what a beautiful voice this woman has by the way - you will simply love her work. She says she is very excited about this concert and is looking forward to it. We are so lucky that this headlining group of Canadian singer/songwriters has kindly agreed to do this fund-raiser for us. They will stay after the concert for a glass of wine and to meet you and sign their CDs which will
be on sale before and after the concert for those of you who are interested.
As promised here is a bit more about Cindy from The Agency Group web site (The Agency Group currently represents Lunch at Allens).
Originally from Bible Hill, Nova Scotia, Cindy spent her formative musical years in western Canada, making her first recordings with the Great Western Orchestra, touring and recording with Ian Tyson and embarking on a solo career. Her three solo albums (Love on the Range, Just a Little Rain and Cindy Church) all include some of her own songs and her friendship with Sylvia Tyson helped lead to the formation of Quartette, with Sylvia, Caitlin Hanford, the late Colleen Peterson and later Gwen Swick. A superb singer with a distinctive voice and a technique she uses only to illuminate the lyric, Cindy invests the songs she performs with warmth, charm and feeling.
Now living in Toronto, she has not only acquired a national reputation as one of the best singers in the country, but an international one as well. Besides touring with her project, "The Nearness of You - a Tribute to the Music of Hoagy Carmichael” along with pianist/composer, Joe Sealey and bassist George Koller, Cindy is also an active member of the fantastic musical collaboration Lunch at Allen's. With fellow singer/songwriters Murray McLauchlan, Ian Thomas and Marc Jordan, Lunch at Allen's has been performing in front of packed theaters across the country in the past year. And in between her recordings and tours with Quartette, The Nearness of You and Lunch at Allen's, Cindy is now also working on a new solo album.
Cindy has been twice honoured with Juno Awards nominations and has also been nominated for awards by the Canadian Country Music Association. Watch for Cindy's fourth solo album in the near future.
Next week a bit about Murray. And as I said tickets are going quickly for this - so please call or visit the Centre 519 599-7837 or visit Jessica's Book Nook in Thornbury, BeMused in Clarksburg, Stuff to Read in Meaford or the Crow's Nest in Collingwood.
