Beaver Valley Community School Cobras posted four solid wins to capture the Bluewater Disctrict School Board boys basketball championship.
Six district tournament winners met in Owen Sound last week, to determine basketball supremacy for the senior elementary level.
The undefeated Beaver Valley Cobras were one of the favourites entering the elite competition.
With three prior tournament wins, including one over one of the best teams in Simcoe County, they were the team to beat.
In their opening game, BV posted a 37-26 win over Dundalk Highpoint. Dan Halos paced the squad with 17 points, Skyler Wright added six. James Breadner and Max Pfeiffer had four points and three boards each.
The team moved on to play Mildmay and earned a 35-27 win. Adam Finn and Dan Halos notched 12 points apiece in the winning effort.
In the semifinal draw, Beaver Valley defeated Derby 23-20. Taylor Lafond and Cody Mogelin had big games in the post ripping down four rebounds and scoring four points each. Eric Hibbard was effective running the offense and tallied four assists and four points in the win.
The championship final saw BV matched upagainst Northpoint of Port Elgin. Both teams had gone undefeated to this point with Northpoint posting huge point spreads over all their opponents. It was evident the locals had to bring their best efforts to compete with this strong squad.
All doubt was erased as BV scored right from the opening tipoff and never relinquished the lead. The Cobras forced turnovers with their pressing defence, ran the floor like track stars, contolled the boards, and shot the ball very well to lead 19-5 at the half.
The second half was more of the same with BV substituting freely and displaying fine team play until the final whistle. The winning score of 38-12 was their largest margin of victory for the day, earned against one of the strongest teams in the area.
Dan Halos led the attack with 15 points, including three-for-three shooting from three-point land. Max Vidrecaire had five points and five steals. Julian Maragno had his best game of the day with a fine four-point effort. Isaac Goodings was a relentless defender and counted six boards and four points. Zander Simmons continued his fine play shooting and rebounding for four points and four boards.
Athletic Director Mike Trudell, Head Coach Joe Halos, and Assistant Coach Steven Simmons atrributed the victory to a great team effort. The Gold Medal and banner will hang in the gym.
