Local chess player Michael Osborne qualified to attend the Provincial Chess Challenge after making the top 10 in Ontario in his grade category in Chess and Math Association rankings.
The Chess n’ Math Association allows prequalifiers to attend the Provincial Chess Challenge. They invite the top 10 rated players (as of Jan 1) for each grade in Ontario to attend. The Grey Bruce area had four of these players this year: Alexander Romanowich from Owen Sound for Grade 3; Victor Romanowich from Port Elgin for Grade 8; Osborne from Beaver Valley Community School , also for Grade 8; and John Drimmie, Owen Sound for Grade 12.
Meanwhile, the 2008 Grey Bruce Regional Chess Challenge was held on Saturday, April 5 at The Knights of Columbus Hall in Owen Sound.
There were 43 competitors representing 22 schools, with the players competing by grade. The winner from each grade qualifies to represent the Grey Bruce Region at the Provincial Chess Challenge in Toronto on April 13, sponsored by the Chess n’ Math Association of Canada.
