The Blue Mountains OPP are sending out an alert about some suspected door-to-door carpet scammers.

The OPP are investigating an incident which took place in Collingwood where an 84-year-old woman was sold several rugs for $8,000. The scam begins when the suspects call the victim reporting they have high-quality, handmade silk area rugs or carpets for sale.

The suspects later show up at the door and begin their high-pressure sale of these carpets, which the suspects advise are at a great price considering the quality. In reality, the rugs are machine-made low-priced carpets, not worth anywhere near the amount they are sold for.

The suspects tell the victim they only take cash and of course, once the transaction is made, they are never to be seen again, the OPP said. Judging on past incidents in other parts of Ontario, it appears the suspects are targeting elderly people of German descent

Anyone with information is asked to contact the O.P.P. at 445-4321 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
