The town is partnering with Beaver Valley Outreach and the Beaver Valley Athletic Association on a project that will offer golf lessons to youth and seniors this summer.

The Blue Mountains town council Monday approved making an application to the provincial Ministry of Health Promotion's Communities In Action Fund for a $5,000 grant for the golf program.

Shawn Everitt, the town's recreation director, told council Outreach and the BVAA will contribute various resources including helping to collect used golf equipment that can be provided to youth, seniors and people with special needs who are interested in learning to play golf.

The program will be offered at the town's Tomahawk pitch-and-putt course.

"The overall goal is to ensure that Tomahawk is available to everyone in the community who wants to play some golf," Everitt said.

He expects to hear by late April whether the grant has been approved.

Everitt said later that Tomahawk will operate on the same basis, this year, as it has in the past. Golfers pay for their round by donation.

Tomahawk was created by local businessman Tom Kritsch who wanted a place for young people and seniors to play golf. The 18 holes are all short, requiring only a pitching wedge or nine iron for most adults. Kritsch never charged a greens fee, but had a donation box to collect funds for charity.

The town bought the property in 2006. Besides the golf course it had space for badly-needed soccer pitches and a works centre for the environment services department.

Everitt's department is also at work on a plan to open more all-season trails through the property.

Tomahawk is located at the south end of Peel St., at the west end of Thornbury off The Blue Mountains 10th Line.
