A local restaurant has been fined $12,500 for a total of seven Ontario Fire Code violations, The Blue Mountains Fire Department said.
The owner of the unidentified restaurant was charged following an emergency response by the fire department last spring. The department said an inspection of the property found non-compliance issues including: failing to maintain commercial cooking ventilation systems and solid-fuel burning chimneys, improper storage of combustible materials and implementing the buildings fire safety plan.
The owner has since complied with the fire code requirements, the fire department said.
Six of the violations resulted in a fine of $1,250 each, while a $5,000 fine was issued for failing to implement the fire safety plan. In total, the business owner was fined $12,500.
"Building owners have a legal responsibility to ensure that their buildings are in compliance with the Ontario Fire Code," said Fire Prevention Officer A. J. Lake.
The Fire Protection and Prevention Act states that every person who contravenes any provision of the Fire Code is guilty of an offence and, on conviction, is liable to a fine of not more than $50,000 for an individual or $100,000 for a corporation and/or to imprisonment for a term of not more than one year.
