Beaver Valley Community School Cobras started their new season on a strong note as they claimed top spot in the Rotary Golden Falcon basketball tournament in Collingwood Friday.
With only a few practices under their belt, the team was a little nervous but advanced to the semifinal game where they met Mountainview School of Collingwood. Outsized, but not outhustled, the Cobras used their speed and playmaking ability to win the game 38-30.
Dan Halos had 22 points, while James Breadner flirted with a double-double with eight points and seven rebounds. Eric Hibbard contributed four points and Adam Finn had five boards in the victory.
The championship final saw Beaver Valley match up against a tough and determined team from Worsley of Wasaga Beach. The Cobras started strong and had the lead at halftime, but Worsley fought back and went ahead by four points in the second frame.
A pressing defense and fast break helped the Cobras get back in the game and eventually win by a score of 44-34. A balanced scoring attack saw Halos net 20, Finn eight, and Breadner six. Max Vidrecaire added five, while Skyler Wright, Isaac Goodings, Max Pfeiffer, and Zander Simmons had a basket each. Cody Mogelin, Julian Maragno and Eric Hibbard were strong rebounding on the glass and stole the ball repeatedly to start the fast break.
It is not often that a Beaver Valley team crosses over to play Simcoe County School Board teams, said coach Joe Halos.
"Winning the Golden Falcon tourney against the best in Collingwood and Wasaga Beach is a worthy accomplishment and positive statement for Beaver Valley Athletics," he said.
