Grey County OPP arrested a Meaford man who attempted to flee from police in a stolen car early Saturday morning.
Officers received a report at 5:30 a.m. that a man was stealing a red Mazda from a local house in Meaford. An officer in the area responded and soon spotted the car as it turned onto Sykes Street from a side street.
Police followed the car, which turned down a number of streets and ran stop signs at more than one location in an attempt to get away. Although the emergency roof lights had been activated, the driver refused to pull over and the officer called off the chase when it became too fast within town.
Once the vehicles had left the built-up area, though, the officer again disengaged as the vehicles entered the Town of the Blue Mountains, however, Collingwood OPP was alerted and managed to disable the vehicle using a spike belt just west of Collingwood. The driver was arrested at that time.
Matthew McQuarrie, 22, of Meaford, faces charges in Simcoe County related to the Collingwood OPP investigation and he is currently in custody in that jurisdiction. He also faces Criminal Code charges of dangerous driving, theft and flight from police following this incident. Additional charges are expected in relation to another occurrence in Meaford prior to the vehicle theft.
