Lions Head Rotary Club President Gerry Greig presents Thornbury Clarksburg Rotary Club's Rick Offord with a $2,000 cheque to send two ShelterBox containers to Haiti. Each Shelterbox costs $1,000 and all of them from now until mid-February will be shipped to Haiti for use by victims of the recent Earthquake. There is enough shelter in each box for ten people.

A shipment of ten-person tents and other shelter supplies will soon make its way to Haiti thanks to donations from local residents.

The Blue Mountains, Collingwood and Meaford Rotary clubs are collecting money to send to ShelterBox Canada to ship shelter supplies to Haiti.

The shelter boxes include a ten-person tunnel tent, 10 sleeping bags, light, heat, a stove, some pots and pans, dishes, tools and a water purifier. They are packed in England by volunteers working 24-hours a day.

Rotarian Rick Offord of the Thornbury-Clarksburg Rotary club said he's already got enough money for 30 of the $1,000 kits. The club is collecting money from any member of the public who wishes to donate. Offord says to give a cheque to a Rotarian in Meaford, Collingwood or The Blue Mountains or donate online at shelterbox.ca.

Pam Poetker of the Meaford Rotary Club says the club plans to match donations made by the public up to $5,000. Donations can be brought to the Meaford Chamber of Commerce with cheques payable to the Meaford Rotary Club. Poetker can be reached at 519-538-5377.

Any of the money collected by February 12 will go to shelter boxes for Haiti.

The federal government will match donations made to ShelterBox for Haiti earthquake relief. The Blue Mountains council decided at its regular meeting on Monday January 25 to match all funds raised by staff at $2 for every $1 raised. So far, staff has raised $1,000.
