Landfill fees won't change

The Municipality of Grey Highlands will continue to charge residents $5 to bring brush to its landfill site.

Council at its regular meeting Monday morning received a complaint from resident Colleen Boer after she was charged $5 to drop off brush at the municipality's landfill site. Boer said dumping brush material was free to local residents in the past and she wanted to know why $5 was now being charged.

Boer also pointed out that between her home and business she receives hundreds of garbage bag tags per year that she doesn't use. She wanted to be able to use some of the surplus garbage bag tags to pay the new landfill fees.

"We'd like to use our bag tags we don't use at home at the dump," said Boer. "We get about 240 tags per year we don't use," she said.

Mayor Brian Mullin explained that Grey Highlands residents can bring bagged household garbage to the landfill free of charge, as long as a bag tag is attached. He said the fees for other materials will still be collected by the municipality.

"Bag tags are meant for curbside pick-up. They're not a currency," said Mayor Mullin.

The landfill fees have been on the books in Grey Highlands for a number of years. The municipality began collecting them last year to raise revenue to help offset the costs associated with operating its landfills.
