Collingwood's Drew Wright advanced to the top four on Canadian Idol much to his surprise.

Wright was in the bottom two this week and appeared to be shocked when host Ben Mulroney announced that he was voted into the final four and perennial favourite Mookie Morris was leaving the show.

On Monday, Wright sang While My Guitar Gently Weeps, which was written by the late George Harrison.

The performance was considered by the judges as one of Wright's best and received a standing ovation from the panel of adjudicators.

"You have some big shoes to fill when you think that George Harrison wrote the song, Eric Clapton played the guitar on it, Jeff Healy covered it and Drew Wright just re-invented it. Great job, my friend," said judge Jake Gold.

Zack Werner, who has been one of Wright's harshest critics, was pleased with the performance.

"I've been a non-believer in certain choices that you made but dude, that was heartfelt and honest and the first time I truly believed in you. I thought that was phenomenal," added Werner.

It was announced on Monday, that the final five participants visited Camp Oochigeas, a camp for kids with cancer.

Wright wrote about the experience, in his blog on the show's website.

"Gonna take a break from discussing the competition this week as we had the privilege of doing something the other day that takes precedence over it and actually makes it feel almost meaningless," he said.

"We were graced with the opportunity to spend the day at camp ooch (Oochigeas).   This is a camp for children battling cancer, I know how it sounds.   At first I must admit I had concerns, like how heavy is this going to be?  How will I handle this situation?  Then we arrived and as soon as we pulled up all of these kids came running and smiling towards the bus.  They formed two rows on either side of the door and used water noodles held between them and bent upward to form a tunnel. So we exit the bus through this tunnel and immediately my worries dispersed and I was left with an almost euphoric feeling.

"The energy there is completely indescribable and uplifting. We got to partake in some fantastic activities with the kids then we played some music for them. What an amazing day it turned out to be.  It was like the coolest kids camp I have ever seen filled with the most amazing people I have ever come across, both children and counselors alike.

"The irony of it is that we were supposed to be going there to lift the spirits of these kids, to help them forget about the troubles they face on a daily basis. And it ended up being these kids showing us just how trivial are day-to-day worries are and that nothing truly has any meaning except life and love."
