1.  Begin with a well-written script.
A comic play such as Lend Me a Tenor by Ken Ludwig.  It opened on Broadway in 1989 and was nominated for six Tony Awards, a Laurence Olivier Award and six Drama Desk Awards.

2.  Add an outrageous plot.
The Cleveland Grand Opera Company imports a world-famous, wine and woman-loving Italian opera star to perform in their gala season opener but discover their special attractions has passed out cold in his hotel room.

3.  Blend in eight characters

A long-suffering Director of the opera company, his gopher-assistant, an overstressed opera star, his overblown wife, a straight-laced Chair of the Guild, an ingenue-groupie, a seducing prima donna and an opera fanatic bellhop.

4.  Spice with a heaping helping of farce
The comedy involves mistaken identities, misguided romantic advances, medical misdiagnosis, desperate measures and compromising positions.

5.  Allow ingredients to bubble and brew to a frenzy
It climaxes in mile-a-minute, door-slamming mayhem.

6.  Garnish

With masterful comic direction, ingenious set & lighting design, elegant 1930 period costumes, hair and make-up.

7.  Mangia!
Eat it up!  Theatre satisfies the soul, brings friends and family together for a feast of the senses.

8.  Don’t forget a bandaid.
Not for burns, but for comic relief in case you split your sides laughing.

Theatre Collingwood presents Lend me a Tenor for only 10 performances, Aug. 13-16 and 19-23 at 8 p.m. with one matinee on August 14 at 2 p.m. at the Gayety Theatre.  For tickets, call (705) 445-2200 or click the link provided.
