On July 18, several teams will come together for the Relay for Life, but this year's assembly will feature something different than previous years.
Team captain Melissa Goldmintz, assisted by co-captain Lee Calvert-Morris, is leading a group of people into the Relay for Life, but not the typical team you'd expect to see at the relay.
"We're a team of 28 and we're all between the ages of 18 and 20, so we hope to bring some youthful exuberance to the relay. I'm really happy with the team we assembled because they are so dedicated to this great cause," said Goldmintz.
Goldmintz's team, affectionately named Smiles for Miles, is hoping to restore some youthful interest in the Relay for Life, and try to use their spirit to inspire others.
Not only are team members raising money on their own, but they are also putting together two major fundraisers that they hope will attract interest in their cause.
Smiles for Miles' car wash will cost $6, and is taking place on Sunday, July 6 at BVCS at 10 a.m. and will run until 4 p.m. But washing cars isn't the only activity the team has planned for that day.
"We will be having a barbecue running as well as face painting and a booth to buy luminaries if you're participating in the Relay for Life. It's going to be a day that will appeal to everyone," said Goldmintz.
If you can't make it out to the car wash, there is also another fundraiser that the team will be hosting. Swimfest will be taking place on Friday, July 11 at the Blue Dolphin Pool in Meaford from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m., and will have a $3 entry fee. Goldmintz didn't want to give too much away, but promised a handful of activities that are geared more towards children, but welcomes everyone.
"We have three certified lifeguards, so you can best believe that we're going to be having a lot fun, but be safe while we're at it," said Goldmintz.
While the team is hoping to inject some life into fundraising, and making the Relay for Life an event for all ages, they understand why they're raising money.
"We're here to help out the Canadian Cancer Society, and raise money towards finding a cure to a disease that has claimed many Canadian lives," said Goldmintz.
Even though she has never personally had a family member or friend touched by cancer, Goldmintz realizes that it is the duty of today's youth to stand up and fight for a cure.
"All of our members are in good health, so why not help out people who aren't? Cancer affects everyone, so everyone needs to help."
