The Thornbury-Clarksburg Rotary Club presents the 24th-annual Chili Cookoff on Saturday, July 5 at the village at Blue Mountain, and promises to be just as spicy as years passed.
The ‘no beans’ policy is still in effect, exactly how it began in 1985 when the Chili Cookoff began, and has come to be known as ‘That Chili Day in July’.
The village will be packed on July 5, as 30 teams compete for the top prize as Ontario’s best chili cook. However, there will be some culinary stardom for the winners south of the border too.
“As a sanctioned provincial championship cookoff, the Blue Mountains Chili Cookoff’s top three chili cooks in the very competitive Texas Division will automatically qualify to cook in Texas in November,” said Gerry McGregor, Chili Cookoff Publicity Chair.
In addition to the Texas Division, there is also an Open Division that still promises undeniable competition, coupled with some unique events.
“Crazy, creatively decorated booths, zany costumes and entertaining antics seem to be a natural part of the day,” said McGregor.
Chili cooking debutantes are always welcome, and are asked to contact Norm Burrows at 519-599-2888 to register for the cookoff.
While the cooking commences at 10:30 a.m., the highlight for most spectators is the chance to taste the competition chili at 2 p.m. Those who purchased a 10-dollar tasting kit have the right to move from booth to booth and sample the delectable portions of chili.
All of the money from the tasting kits represents the Thornbury-Clarksburg Rotary’s primary fundraising source, and the proceeds go toward a specific project for Rotarians in their own community or overseas.
McGregor looks forward to this year’s cookoff because it truly is a pivotal part of the Town of the Blue Mountain’s heritage.
“The whole event is a feast for the senses. Throw in the fantastic live music onstage in the plaza all afternoon and you’ve got a fun-filled family event. And the kicker…parking and admission are free!”
