A performance at the Gayety Theatre next weekend will benefit My Friend's House and the Collingwood & District Humane Society.
Children of Eden, a musical written by Sarah Kyle of the Aurora Opera Company, will take the stage on Fri., May. 23 and Sat., May. 24
The play is a combination of the story of Adam and Eve and Noah's Ark, mixed in with jazz and gospel songs.
One of the reasons the two charities decided to get involved was to raise awareness of the connection between animals and abused women.
According to a recent survey from the Ontario SPCA, about 43 per cent of women state that concern over their pets' safety prevented them from leaving their violent home situation earlier.
"Making a difference in the lives of abused women, their children and their pets is a long-term commitment for both My Friend's House and Collingwood District Humane Society," said Alison FitzGerald, executive director of My Friend's House.
With the humane society in the midst of a fundraising campaign and My Friend's House in need of funding, Fitzgerald said this event will help both organizations.
"Our two charities rely heavily on the community for financial support and joining together is a natural fit as it is often concern for the safety of a family pet that prevents women and their children from leaving a violent domestic situation," said FitzGerald.
Tickets are $25 for adults and $18 for children and are available at Barb's Clothes Closet in Stayner, 97.7 The Beach in Wasaga Beach, The Crow's Nest in Collingwood, Jessica's Book Nook in Thornbury and Stuff to Read in Meaford.
