Drew Wright says thanks for all the support

Collingwood Canadian Idol contestant Drew Wright will be returning home this weekend.

The Collingwood resident, who advanced to the top 16 of the CTV reality show, will be performing a free concert on Saturday evening.

Wright will be in Collingwood as CTV will be shooting a biography video and will be focusing on his family and where he grew up.

The concert will be held at the Station on St. Paul Street and will start at 7 p.m., but organizers are asking residents to show up at about 6 p.m.

John Gabriele, who has been organizing a promotional campaign, said CTV producers are looking to film residents who are supporting Wright, whether it is with a poster, t-shirt or cookies.

Gabriele is asking as many residents as possible to attend the show and bring Vote for Drew signs, banners and t-shirts.

"If we get people bringing banners that say vote for Drew, this is what will really sell Drew," he said.

Also, any business or residents who have a sign supporting Wright are asked to contact Gabriele at 445-9030 or at gabrielephotography@bellnet.ca.

"I will let CTV know and they will film these places," he said.

Gabriele said the support from Collingwood has surprised a lot of CTV producers.

"It can only go further from here if people watch the show and vote," he said.

Wright said the concert will be a thank-you to those in Collingwood who have supported him on the show so far.

"It's too say thank you," he said. "There are people making vote for Drew cookies and walking around with Vote for Drew t-shirts. The support is crazy."

On Monday, Wright performed The Grace by Never-ending White Lights and on Wednesday it was announced he advanced to the top 16.

"I'm happy to be here," he said. "I thought, all-in-all, there were things I could have performed better. There were some notes on the end I was a bit sharp on."

Wright never thought Canadian Idol would be an option, as he was working to sign a record deal on his own. However, he said to himself, if he wasn't signed by his final year of eligibility, he would give it a shot.

"I kept pushing forward to try and do my own thing," he said.

Wright says his immediate goal is to advance to the top 10 and he has not thought too much farther ahead. He is hopeful his notoriety will allow him to perform in new places where he has never been before.

Wright feels the experience has made him a better performer.

"I haven't put too much thought into it," he said. "It's a very different atmosphere. You have to take into account, the cameras and the audience at home."

Gabriele said Canadian Idol will be shown on a big screen on Monday or Tuesday at Town Hall.

Anyone needing information is asked to contact him at gabrielephotography@bellnet.ca or 445-9030.
